The North Pacific Research Board (NPRB) supports large-scale ecosystem studies off Alaska called Integrated Ecosystem Research Programs. The most recent was completed in the Arctic. To study the Arctic from an ecosystem perspective, it requires a highly sophisticated ship and science instruments to withstand the harsh conditions found in polar latitudes. R/V Sikuliaq and R/V Ocean Starr were both used during the field seasons for the Arctic Program
